Costa Rica has always been one of the symbolic countries of quality coffee. Its long-standing production tradition, combined with ideal climatic and environmental conditions, has allowed the development of a cultivation and processing model recognized worldwide. The key to this success has been the collaboration between small producers and wet mills, which made it possible to combine both quantity and quality, bringing the coffees of local communities and villages onto the international stage.
Since the early 1800s, coffee cultivation in Costa Rica has faced major logistical challenges: almost non-existent roads and a fragile economy made it difficult to transport the harvest from farms to wet mills and, later, for export. The solution came with the famous Carretas, the ox-drawn carts that became a symbol of national identity and of Costa Rica’s deep connection with coffee. In 1988 they were declared a national symbol, and since 1995 they have been recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
With this spirit, Carreta Azul was born, a coffee line presented by SMS Specialty Coffee and selected through FJO Patalillo, in collaboration with small producers in the San Juanillo area. Here, at altitudes between 1,200 and 1,500 meters, prized varieties such as Caturra and Catuaí are grown under ideal conditions. Each lot is a special reserve, processed with the Natural method, enhancing the sweetness and aromatic complexity that characterize the country’s finest coffees.
In the cup, it reveals intense notes of tropical fruits, chocolate, and winey hints, supported by a rich and satisfying body.
On cupping, according to the SCA protocol, this coffee scored 85.00 points.
